NON PROPHETS -THE CURE

Non-Prophets is a pairing of lyricist Sage Francis and beatmaker Joe Beats. Their debut album, Hope was released on Lex Records in 2003. In early 2004, they toured the United States on Sage Francis' infamous "Fuck Clear Channel" tour. The duo came to people's attention with their first effort, the "Drop Bass" b/w "Bounce" 12" single on Emerge Music in 1999. The follow up release came in 2000 as the "All Word, No Play" vinyl single. Shortly after the Non-Prophets singles caught a buzz, Sage verbally committed to the then up-and-coming label anticon. for the release of his first solo album. Until Personal Journals' official unveiling in 2002, Francis self-released his "Sick Of" series which included Non-Prophets material. Around the same time Beats created his first compilation of instrumentals, Reverse Discourse. Here Joey introduces his unpaused/uninterrupted style of producing. With Sage's help the album saw the light of day on his label, Strange Famous Records.

?The Hangover Part II? Trailer

Audiences all over cheered the awesome teaser trailer that Warner Brothers released for their summer blockbuster The Hangover Part II. It announced that "The Wolfpack is back." Now they're really back with a full theatrical trailer. Check it out after the jump.

You can check it out in high definition by heading over to Apple [1] via this link or just watch it embedded below.

Okay, so here are my thoughts. My first impression was that I'm surprised Phillips and company went with the exact same gimmick - losing a member of your party and forgetting an entire night. Sure it's a different person and different country but doesn't that feel a tad bit forced? Then you watch the rest of the trailer and you kind of don't care. You missed these characters and are filled with a morbid curiosity as to what they did this time. How could they have fallen for the same trick again?

Next I realized this is a rare comedy trailer that doesn't blow the entire movie. Sure there are a few chuckles, a few blown jokes and a lot of shots that make you scratch your head - not to mention blowing the entire set-up for the movie - but, for the most part, after two and a half minutes you don't know exactly how it's all going to wind up.

Which leads me to my final conclusion after watching the theatrical trailer for The Hangover Part II. I'm extremely skeptical. The first movie, as funny and revered as it was, relied on the fact that it was an original story with characters who we were unfamilar with. They could have done anything. This time we know the situation, we know the players, and even though this trailer does show a lot of promise, it also doesn't quite sell me 100%.

What do you think?

New Photos: ?Transformers: Dark of the Moon?

With the approaching release of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, images from the film are starting to get out into the wild. It seems like there are certain requirements for any Transformers stills that don't feature robots: they've got to have explosions, Shia LaBeouf running, or characters appearing to cautiously move through a location. And now we've got an image to cover each one of those bases for the third film. Check 'em out after the break. And, sorry, no robots.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon hits in 3D, 2D and IMAX formats on July 1st. Michael Bay directed, and the film features Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn, Julie White, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Patrick Dempsey, Alan Tudyk and John Turturro.

"Meat glue" sounds kind of awesome

I know this story on Planet Green—all about the edible "meat glue" that holds together everything from imitation crab sticks and chicken nuggets to modernist chef cuisine—is supposed to make me freak out and only want to eat organic, whole foods from the farmer's market. Trouble is: I kind of think meat glue sounds pretty cool. I like the fact that we've found new ways to use scraps and parts of meat that aren't sell-able on their own. That alone is nothing new. Humans have been doing that for centuries (See: sausage, soup stock). Transglutaminase—meat glue's real name—is just a newer tool. And it doesn't even sound particularly scary or gross. At least, not to this honest-with-herself omnivore. Technically called thrombian, or transglutaminase (TG), it is an enzyme that food processors use to hold different kinds of meat together. TG is an enzyme that catalyzes covalent bonds between free amine groups in a protein, like lysine, and gamma-caroxminid groups, like glutamine. These bonds are pretty durable and resist degradation once the food has been formed. Thrombian is made from pig or cow blood, though you'll see it on labels, if at all, as "composite meat product." It's a naturally occurring enzyme, derived from animal blood. When you put it that way, it's easy to understand why the EU—which tends to be more stringent on rules about food additives than the United States—voted nearly unanimously in favor of allowing transglutaminase to be used in products sold in EU countries. Personally, I'm with wrecksdart, who Submitterated this, in wondering where I can get transglutaminase, and what ridiculous foods I can make at home with it. Animal-shaped meatloaf pops, here I come....

FREEWAY & JAKE ONE - KNOW WHAT I MEAN

Rappers have been rhyming about hustling, living in the ghetto and the perils of street life since the dawn of Hip Hop.  But what distinguishes Freeway, is his unique approach to tackling these subjects.  Freeway neither boastfully brags about his days hustling on the crime-ridden street corners of North Philly, nor does he dogmatically preach at his listeners while lecturing them to live righteously.  Instead, his lyrics are laced with ghetto-weary "been there, done that" sentiment that implies there is life beyond the block. After a pact made with fellow Philly native Beanie Sigel, Freeway was brought to Roc-A-Fella records where he made his recording debut on "1-900-Hustler" from Jay-Z's multi-platinum The Dynasty: Roc La Familia CD.  Shortly after it's release, Freeway's North Philly ways caught up with him and he found himself serving a six-month jail sentence for possession of illegal narcotics with intent to deliver.  Faced with the realities of street life, Freeway thankfully opted to put all his efforts into his music. In 2003 Freeway released his debut album Philadelphia Freeway, solidifying himself as a force to be reckoned with amongst the other stars of the Roc. After achieving gold status (selling over 500,000 units), Freeway played an instrumental role in establishing he and Beans' Philly crew State Property.  It seemed as though Freeway was on an unstoppable roll.  But as life teaches us all good things must come to an end...and the next four years found State Property head Beanie Sigel convicted of federal weapons charges, group turmoil and most importantly the historic breakup of the Roc-A-Fella dynasty of Jay-Z and Dame Dash. With all the chaos, Freeway, a devout Muslim, accepted an opportunity to travel to the holy city of Mecca on Hajj (a journey required by every Muslim at least once in his or her lifetime if he or she is able to).  Upon his return, Freeway recorded his long-awaited sophomore release, Free at Last.  Uncertain about his standing amongst all the label drama, Freeway found a new ally with Hip Hop heavyweight 50 Cent and a deal was brokered to have Jay-Z and 50 Cent co-executive produce the album.  While both were featured on the record, the project ended up solely a Roc-A-Fella release, with 50 giving up his co-executive producer's role.  Released in 2007, Free at Last was a moderate success but unfortunately lacked the label focus and attention of his debut release. Never one to complain or sit stagnant, Freeway got on his grind and started blasting the internet and the streets with mixtapes, remixes and free tracks, raising his profile to new levels.  In 2008, Freeway would reconnect with producer Jake One (who produced on his sophomore outing, Free at Last) to record two tracks for his Rhymesayers debut, White Van Music.  The sessions not only resulted in two of the album’s highlights, including the classic collaboration with Brother Ali called "The Truth", but numerous additional songs that showed a real connection between the G-Unit beatsmith and Freeway. With his release from Roc-A-Fella records, the path had been set for Freeway’s next official album, The Stimulus Package.  The Stimulus Package presented an opportunity to not only take it back to the basics of: one Producer, one MC, but also provide a chance for Freeway to spread his independent wings and give something special back to Hip Hop, the culture that saved his life years earlier on those North Philly streets. The Stimulus Package was  released by indie powerhouse Rhymesayers Entertainment on February, 16th 2010 and features guest appearances by Beanie Sigel, Raekwon, Young Chris, Birdman, Bun-B, Latoiya Williams, Omillio Sparks and Mr. Porter.

Leave it to Zito to call Pablo "Kung Fu Panda"

On defense, the Giants have used him as a starting third baseman, first baseman, and, for a short period, as a catcher for pitcher Barry Zito,[2] who gave Sandoval the nickname Kung Fu Panda.[3] He received the nickname after a play on September 19, 2008, where he scored a run against the Los Angeles Dodgers by jumping over the tag of catcher Danny Ardoin, scoring from second base on a single by Bengie Molina.[cita

I always wondered how specifically Pablo Sandoval got the name "Kung Fu Panda".

Carbon nanotubes used to more easily detect cancer cells, HIV

Cancer's not slowing its march to ruining as many lives as it possibly can, so it's always pleasing to hear of any new developments that act as hurdles. The latest in the world of disease-prevention comes from Harvard University, where researches have created a dime-sized carbon nanotube forest (read: lots of nanotubes, like those shown above) that can be used to trap cancer cells when blood passes through. A few years back, Mehmet Toner, a biomedical engineering professor at Harvard, created a device similar to the nano-forest that was less effective because silicon was used instead of carbon tubes. Today, Toner has teamed up with Brian Wardle, associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT, who together have redesigned the original microfluid device to work eight times more efficiently than its predecessor. The carbon nanotubes make diagnosis a fair bit simpler, largely because of the antibodies attached to them that help trap cancer cells as they pass through -- something that's being tailored to work with HIV as well. Things are starting to look moderately promising for cancer-stricken individuals, as hospitals have already began using the original device to detect malignant cells and ultimately prevent them from spreading -- here's hoping it's qualified for mass adoption sooner rather than later.

Google Street View invades historic landmarks, makes it unnecessary for you to ever leave the house

The vagabonds of Google's Street View team have struck again, this time conquering classical French and Italian landmarks for their mothership's immense pictorial collection. As of today, you're able to drop your little yellow avatar in Google Maps right atop such famous locales as the Colosseum of Rome or Florence's Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, whereupon you'll be transported right to it (or, in the case of the Colosseum, inside it) in the same way as if they were any old street addresses. This follows, of course, Google's introduction of an intriguing indoor version of Street View for some of the world's most prestigious museums recently and continues the company's trend of bringing the arts, in this case classical architecture, to a wider audience. We just wonder what reason said audience will have to ever step outside with all this splendor at its fingertips indoors.

Roger Ebert Predicted The Future Of Film In 1987

We all know that Roger Ebert is a genius when it comes to film, but it turns out he's a fortune teller as well. The year was 1987. Cable TV was in its infancy and many of us had to get up from the couch to change the channel. Betamax was still trying to compete with VHS and recording a TV show required a VCR and an alarm clock. Renting movies from a video store was a family event and the average movie ticket was around $5. In short, things were incredibly different from how they are now.

At the same time Ebert, who was currently on the air with Siskel & Ebert, was doing an interview with Omni Magazine and the famous Chicago Sun-Times film critic was asked about how fierce the competition between television and movies would be in the future. His answer, given almost 25 years ago, was just about right on the money. Read what he said after the jump.

Thanks to Pale Of Future [1] for digging up this awesome nugget and the Los Angeles Times [2] for alerting us to it.
OMNI: How will the fierce competition between television and the movies work out in the future?

EBERT: We will have high-definition, wide-screen television sets and a push-button dialing system to order the movie you want at the time you want it. You'll not go to a video store but instead order a movie on demand and then pay for it. Videocassette tapes as we know them now will be obsolete both for showing prerecorded movies and for recording movies. People will record films on 8mm and will play them back using laser-disk/CD technology.

I also am very, very excited by the fact that before long, alternative films will penetrate the entire country. Today seventy-five percent of the gross from a typical art film in America comes from as few as six --six-- different theaters in six different cities. Ninety percent of the American motion-picture marketplace never shows art films. With this revolution in delivery and distribution, anyone, in any size town or hamlet, will see the movies he or she wants to see. It will be the same as it's always been with books. You can be a hermit and still read any author you choose.
How crazy is that? Who even knew what high definition or on demand was in 1987? Granted, he was wrong about 8mm, but his description of a technology that didn't exist yet - DVD's - as a "laser-disk/CD" is spot on.

Ebert also said this:
By the year 2000 or so, a motion picture will cost as much money as it now costs to publish a book or make a phonograph album.
Ignoring the archaic thought of a "phonograph album," this sentiment also happened. You can make a movie for practically nothing now with the right technology when, in 1987, you needed a film camera and expensive films or a very large camcorder that recorded in a horribly low quality videotape.

Maybe because this fortuitous quote has been dug up, Mr. Ebert will let us know what the future holds for us 25 year from now? What do you all think?

?Fraggle Rock? Movie Stalled by Weinstein Company

It's been almost a year since [1] we heard any news about a Fraggle Rock movie. That goes for the director too. As more and more properties from the Seventies and Eighties get remade, rebooted or reimagined, the idea of a Fraggle Rock movie like a no-brainer. Now Cory Edwards, the director of Hoodwinked who has long been attached [2] to Fraggle Rock: The Movie has posted an update to his blog about the film and it seems like the ball is totally in the court of the Weinstein Company. Read Edwards' update after the break.

Here's what Edwards had to say on his blog [3]:
Many, many, many of you have repeatedly asked for some kind of update on the Fraggle Rock movie. The truth is, I got nothin?. There?s nothing to report except that The Weinstein Company has everything they need to move forward, and the ball is in their court. They?ve talked about getting a new writer, which I?m willing to do. They?ve talked about starting over from scratch, which I?m willing to do. But I have not heard a peep from their camp in almost a year. I completely sympathize with all of you that are waiting for a movie, but let?s all remember that the next best thing to making a Fraggle movie is avoiding making a BAD ONE. So at least we?re doing that. Until something new happens to awaken the project from its deep coma, we can at least enjoy the untainted TV series on DVD and The Hub Network. As for me, I?m already working on new things. I hope you?ll stick around and check in here? I?ll be announcing my next project very, very soon.
This project was first announced in 2008 [4] and even last summer it still seemed to be swimming around [5] in development hell, with a lot of talk about the film connecting with "an older, more sophisticated audience."

It's certainly discerning that Edwards hasn't heard from the Weinstein Company in a year about the project but there are probably two things that they're looking at before moving forward with a Fraggle Rock movie. First, Edwards' next film, Hoodwinked Too! has yet to be released [6] so they probably want to see how that film will do just to make sure he's the right man for the job.

Second, Disney's The Muppets is currently in post-production, aimed at a November release. Considering Hollywood is filled with followers instead of innovators, the Weinstein Company is probably excited Disney will be the first take a risk on a puppet movie and then - if it's a success - they can move forward with theirs.

Do you feel like this movie is ever going to happen? Do you understand the Weinstein's trepidations about moving forward?

Crackle starts streaming all of its free movies to Roku, PS3, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players

Sony's Crackle has had a more successful life so far than its previous iteration as Grouper, streaming movies, TV shows and shorts to various devices since launching back in '07 and announced today its full library will be streaming to the PS3, Roku boxes, Sony Blu-ray players and Bravia TVs. Expanding full access from just the Google TV (there's also an Android app that currently streams some of the items) it's taking credit as the only provider offering free full length flicks including Ghostbusters, Bad Boys, A Few Good Men and more for free on these platforms. The drawbacks are video that tops out at 480p standard definition and Hulu-style commercial interruptions but if you absolutely must watch Weekend at Bernies II without spending any money it is an option -- at least, as long as the PS3 browser doesn't crash with an out of memory error like it did for us. It did work better on more capable platforms, so check out the full details in the press release after the break.

German students make life-sized VR Fruit Ninja, declare war on digital produce (video)

Do you enjoy the produce-slashing action that Fruit Ninja affords, but feel constrained by the meager display capabilities of handheld devices? Well, some German students from FH Wedel University of Applied Sciences have created a VR version of the game to make your dreams of having more massive melons fly at your face come true. Using a CAVE four-walled virtual environment to display the hurtling fruit and a modified Wiimote to do the slicing and dicing, players can exorcise their cantaloupe and kumquat demons in a life-sized fruit cleaving frenzy -- with none of the Gallagher-style mess. See it in action after the break, just be sure to don your Kikou first.

How to tell which side of your rental car the gas cap is on

Here's something I've never been able to remember: when I rent a car I forget to notice which side the gas cap is on. For the rest of my trip, I don't think to look. I only think about it when I'm driving and it's time to fill up the tank. I try to use the side view mirrors to see which side the gas cap is on. It never works. Then I look at other cars on the road, hoping to spot one that is the same model as mine so I can see which side the gas cap is on. Unfortunately, I'm car blind in the way that some people are face blind, so that usually doesn't work. I usually end up driving to the pump and finding out if I got lucky. But last month I met Joshua Schacter (creator of Delicious) at TED and he told me that most late-model cars have a little arrow on the gas gauge that points to the side of the car with the gas cap. This information has changed my life. Joshua's latest creation is ClueDB, a website "for sharing tips and tricks on how to make life better. You can tag, vote and comment on the clues you like. And you can contribute clues as well." Sample clue: "Putting a screw into a threaded hole -- Turn the screw backwards until it clicks into the first thread. the chances of putting it in wrong are much less that way."...

Motorola Xoom officially landing in UK next week, still has to finalize pricing and SKUs

As much as we love our rumormongering, a good hard confirmation never goes astray around these parts, and we've just heard directly from Moto that its Xoom tablet will be arriving in the UK next week. When precisely, we don't know, but the major electronics retailers will all be playing their part -- Dixons (and its subsidiaries Currys and PC World) plus the Carphone Warehouse were specifically named. As to pricing, we've seen pretty strong indications that it'll be £500 for the WiFi-only version and £600 for the 3G-equipped one, though there's no immediate confirmation about which (or if both) will be coming next week. Either way, the important thing is that the world's first Honeycomb tablet will be on sale in some form just as soon as the next British fiscal year gets started.

Louis Vuitton sues artist, again

In a T-shirt sold in 2008 to raise money for victims of violence in Darfur, artist Nadia Plesner depicted an African child holding a Louis Vuitton-style bag. So Louis Vuitton sued her. When she recently included the same design in a painting, it sued her again. The first time around, Louis Vuitton claimed it wanted merely to stop her from selling the merchandise. This time, however, there is little pretense that it is about anything other than wanting the image gotten rid of. Paul Schmelzer writes: Despite a clearly artistic -- and not commercial -- intention behind the work, Louis Vuitton is seeking monetary penalties (220,000 Euros or roughly $307,000 and counting, with no ceiling on the penalty) and aims to prevent Plesner from exhibiting the painting either on her website or at venues in the European Union. (Here's an unofficial English translation of the court order.) LV sues artist Nadia Plesner [Eyeteeth]...
