You'll Laugh, You'll Cry [Video]

Whew. What a week. I could really use a beer or six and a shot of Jim Beam and a burrito and ten hours of sleep. Maybe some off-topic conversation in an open thread would complement that body destruction and recovery nicely. I think so! More »

A quick note about the Engadget Podcast this week

We just wanted to give you guys a heads-up and let you know that while you won't see a new Engadget Podcast today -- don't worry -- it's not going anywhere! We had to shuffle our schedules a little bit to have on some very special guests, namely, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block. We decided it would be fun to celebrate Engadget's 5th birthday with a chat about how the site got its start. So... you should see the new podcast pop up in your queue sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience!

Samsung Galaxy W gets the FCC once over (again), appears ready for AT&T

In a Samsung Galaxy soon coming your way, are a stable of alphabetically ranked handsets. Among these newly hatched Korean mobile offspring is the 'W' line -- meant to imply wireless wonder. Well, wonder about its US bow no more because that handset -- previously announced for the British Isles -- is getting a double take at the FCC. The time 'round, the Commission's filings reveal GSM / WCDMA 850MHz / 1900MHz bands, making this variant prime for Canada's networks and our own AT&T -- at speeds of 14.4Mbps down. We know from previous reports that this 3.7-incher sports a Super LCD display, in addition to a single-core 1.4GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, 4GB of storage, WiFi and Bluetooth. Now, all we need to complete the picture is an official announcement and an offering in virgin white. Check out the source below if spectrum testing rings your bell.

Not being Filipino enough

Have to admit, when I saw the name Randall Mann, my first thought is, this ain't no Filipino name. But the more I thought about how hypocritical I was I realized that having a "Filipino" name doesn't make one. It probably goes along the lines of, if you don't know how to speak Pilipino then you're not Filipino "enough". So wrong. Thus the definition of what being Filipino broadens, and what I can summize is that being Filipino is all in the heart.

Sorry so short, but this blog was written via iPhone at the SF Public Library. Ah, technology.

New Line Will Make a New ?Mortal Kombat? After All, Directed By Web Series Helmer Kevin Tancharoen

In June 2010, the short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, based on the popular fighting video game series, hit the web. Armed with recognizable faces like Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan and no small amount of violence, the short became a sensation [1], racking up millions of views on YouTube. The director was revealed [2] to be choreographer Kevin Tancharoen, and the short spawned a web series [3] that played out over the following year.

When the short hit we wondered if it might be a way to test the waters for a new feature film based on Mortal Kombat. That wasn't quite the purpose on the studio side of things, though Tancharoen definitely viewed it as an audition. And that audition ended up working out that way in the end. New Line is now planning a new Mortal Kombat film, which will be written by Oren Uziel (the writer of MK: Rebirth) and directed by Tancharoen.

Deadline [4] and THR [5] both report on the film but there aren't many details. No actor deals are in place, and there isn't even a script. THR says " new story will not serve as an extension of the game of digital series." That's a bit mangled, but if you replace 'of' with 'or,' it makes more sense. In other words, this MMK will be an all-new thing rather than something that spins off a story from the recent games or the web series.

But how complicated can the story really be? There are human fighters and bestially-enhanced fighters, and they...fight. As long as the film is cast with people that can really perform the action, it might work out to be entertaining. Though this has been tried before, and previous MK films are hardly classics.

Regardless, congrats to Tancharoen for getting his plan to work out in the end; it's not often we see this sort of result from a spec effort like his.

FREEWAY & JAKE ONE - KNOW WHAT I MEAN

Rappers have been rhyming about hustling, living in the ghetto and the perils of street life since the dawn of Hip Hop.  But what distinguishes Freeway, is his unique approach to tackling these subjects.  Freeway neither boastfully brags about his days hustling on the crime-ridden street corners of North Philly, nor does he dogmatically preach at his listeners while lecturing them to live righteously.  Instead, his lyrics are laced with ghetto-weary "been there, done that" sentiment that implies there is life beyond the block. After a pact made with fellow Philly native Beanie Sigel, Freeway was brought to Roc-A-Fella records where he made his recording debut on "1-900-Hustler" from Jay-Z's multi-platinum The Dynasty: Roc La Familia CD.  Shortly after it's release, Freeway's North Philly ways caught up with him and he found himself serving a six-month jail sentence for possession of illegal narcotics with intent to deliver.  Faced with the realities of street life, Freeway thankfully opted to put all his efforts into his music. In 2003 Freeway released his debut album Philadelphia Freeway, solidifying himself as a force to be reckoned with amongst the other stars of the Roc. After achieving gold status (selling over 500,000 units), Freeway played an instrumental role in establishing he and Beans' Philly crew State Property.  It seemed as though Freeway was on an unstoppable roll.  But as life teaches us all good things must come to an end...and the next four years found State Property head Beanie Sigel convicted of federal weapons charges, group turmoil and most importantly the historic breakup of the Roc-A-Fella dynasty of Jay-Z and Dame Dash. With all the chaos, Freeway, a devout Muslim, accepted an opportunity to travel to the holy city of Mecca on Hajj (a journey required by every Muslim at least once in his or her lifetime if he or she is able to).  Upon his return, Freeway recorded his long-awaited sophomore release, Free at Last.  Uncertain about his standing amongst all the label drama, Freeway found a new ally with Hip Hop heavyweight 50 Cent and a deal was brokered to have Jay-Z and 50 Cent co-executive produce the album.  While both were featured on the record, the project ended up solely a Roc-A-Fella release, with 50 giving up his co-executive producer's role.  Released in 2007, Free at Last was a moderate success but unfortunately lacked the label focus and attention of his debut release. Never one to complain or sit stagnant, Freeway got on his grind and started blasting the internet and the streets with mixtapes, remixes and free tracks, raising his profile to new levels.  In 2008, Freeway would reconnect with producer Jake One (who produced on his sophomore outing, Free at Last) to record two tracks for his Rhymesayers debut, White Van Music.  The sessions not only resulted in two of the album’s highlights, including the classic collaboration with Brother Ali called "The Truth", but numerous additional songs that showed a real connection between the G-Unit beatsmith and Freeway. With his release from Roc-A-Fella records, the path had been set for Freeway’s next official album, The Stimulus Package.  The Stimulus Package presented an opportunity to not only take it back to the basics of: one Producer, one MC, but also provide a chance for Freeway to spread his independent wings and give something special back to Hip Hop, the culture that saved his life years earlier on those North Philly streets. The Stimulus Package was  released by indie powerhouse Rhymesayers Entertainment on February, 16th 2010 and features guest appearances by Beanie Sigel, Raekwon, Young Chris, Birdman, Bun-B, Latoiya Williams, Omillio Sparks and Mr. Porter.

LG seeks ban on South Korean BMW and Audi sales, sticks out its LED lit tongue at Osram

Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where we all just got along, people worked for the thrill of it, and knowledge was free? Yeah, fat chance dreamers. 'Sue', our new millennium's most oft-used verb, is getting some heavy play at the hands of the tech industry. The latest court room combatants? Why, that'd be LG Group and Osram. You see, once upon a time LG was late to the LED patent game, and was content to fork over the cash to Osram for use of its tech. Skip to now, and the electronics giant's claiming it can get its lighting goods elsewhere, picking from a plethora of relevant IP-holding companies and combining that with its own patents. Despite having already countersued Osram in July to prevent the import of that company's allegedly infringing products into South Korea, LG's gathered its legal arsenal once again to block the sale of Audis and BMWs throughout the entire country -- cars that include Osram's LED tech. It's hard to imagine the courts would grant such a wide-sweeping ban on major auto players' bread-and-butter. And all grandstanding aside, it's more likely the two fisticuffing parties will come to some sort of revised financial agreement.
