Pepper-spray inventor: "It's fashionable to use chemical agents on people who have an opinion"

Amy Goodman interviews Kamran Loghman, inventor of modern pepper spray and developer of police procedures for its use. Loghman regrets his work today, and says it's "fashionable" to use chemical agents on "people who have an opinion": It is becoming more and more fashionable right now, this day and age, to use chemical on people [...]

Stories of MJ in the studio (via @questlove)

Check out this website I found at board.okayplayer.com

here's some of my faves:

  • He would sing us an entire string arrangement, every part. Steve Porcaro once told me he witnessed MJ doing that with the string section in the room. Had it all in his head, harmony and everything. Not just little eight bar loop ideas. he would actually sing the entire arrangement into a micro-cassette recorder complete with stops and fills.
  • During the recording of "Smile" on HIStory, Bruce thought it would be great if Michael would sing live with the orchestra. But of course, we didn't tell the players that. We set him up in a vocal booth off to the side. They rehearsed a bit without vocals in, then during the first take Michael sang, just about knocked them out of their chairs.
  • I was assisting Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis while they recorded the background vocals for "Scream" with MJ and Janet. The two of them singing together was amazing. Super tight, no bad notes. One part after another. When they took a break they sang the showtunes they used to sing as kids. Again, perfect harmony. Mj refused to sing the "stop f*ckin' with me part" because he would NOT curse.
  • We recorded a Christmas song during the summer of '94 that needed a children's choir. Michael insisted that the entire studio be decorated with xmas lights, tree, fake snow and a sled for their recording. And he bought presents for everyone.

There are plenty more but you'll have to link to it to read!

This looks interesting. Especially for those unorganized people like me: Delicious Library 2

Catalog your books, movies, music, software, toys, tools, electronics, & video games.

Since I've been in transition, aka been laid-off and still looking, I've been telling myself to get all my books together and organize them. This bit of software looks like it might help! It's called Delicious Library 2. It says to hold up the book, DVD, or CD's barcode up to your computers webcam/iSight and then it'll post a virtual picture of that item on a virtual shelf. And then you can post notes to it like where it is or who you lent it to on what date. Interesting... but it costs $40.

British Library digitizes 300 years worth of newspaper archives, brings 65 million articles online

Britain's historical news junkies are in for a treat today, because the British Library has just digitized a major chunk of its newspaper archive, comprised of four million pages spanning some 300 years of headlines. With today's launch of the British Newspaper Archive, users can search and browse through a staggering 65 million articles from a range of regional UK papers, encompassing the most newsworthy events from the past few centuries. Developed in coordination with online publisher Brightsolid, the archive also allows for remote article access and download, saving researchers a trip to the British Library's newspaper depository in North London. The initiative seems similar to some we've seen from the Library of Congress in recent years, though the archive isn't completely open to the public. Users can search the site for free, but will have to pay a subscription fee to download any article as a PDF. And, expansive as the selection may be, Brightsolid and the Library are aiming to digitize a full 40 million pages over the course of the next decade.

Nevertheless, today's arrival marks an important first step for the British Library and, in a larger sense, British history -- on both individual and collective levels. "For the first time people can search for their ancestors through the pages of our newspapers wherever they are in the world at any time," Ed King, head of the library's newspaper collection, told the Telegraph. "But what's really striking is how these pages take us straight back to scenes of murders, social deprivation and church meetings from hundreds of year ago, which we no longer think about as we haven't been able to easily access articles about them." Be sure to check out the archive at the source link below, and be prepared to lose your entire afternoon in the process.

Concept Art For the Lizard From ?The Amazing Spider-Man?

Just yesterday we saw one vision of the Lizard from Marc Webb's upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man via the magic of a Pez dispenser [1]. Now we've got what appears to be concept art of the character -- this may be a bit early, but it is also very close to what we saw on screen at Comic Con this past summer. Check it out in full below.

[2]

The image comes from a Russian Spider-Man site [3], via ComingSoon [4]. If not legit, this is based on some very quick work in the wake of that Pez unveiling in the past day or so. But again, this bears a strong, though not exact, resemblance to the character as seen briefly in footage in San Diego.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. It opens July 3, 2012.

CECIL OTTER - SUFFICIENTLY BREATHLESS

In his music and his manner, Cecil Otter seems to belong to a different era of American history. Usually found brooding under the shadow of a fedora, he’s the kind of guy who’s got a five o’clock shadow by mid-morning. At times, the Minneapolis based emcee/producer feels more like a boxcar storyteller, or the down on his luck country singer in the last dive bar on earth. His character is possessed by some lost American spirit of honesty and romanticism: he takes only one meal a day and prefers for his correspondence to be scrawled on bar napkins rather than in emails. Cecil fell in love with hip-hop at 8 years old, when his 14 year old sister ran away from home and left him with a box of rap tapes. From there he began writing stories, and the stories later became rhymes. Inspired by underground legends like Ant (of Atmosphere) and Sixtoo, Cecil delved into the crates and circuits of drum machines to craft his own haunting sound and unique style. Later, he would earn his stripes as a co-founder of the Doomtree crew, one of the twin cities’ most dominant underground rap outfits. Cecil’s most recent collaborations with Doomtree (on the collective’s self-titled disc) appeared on Billboard’s regional Heatseekers charts, as the 1 hip hop album on CMJ, charted 23 on iTunes’ rap charts, and made an appearance in the top 100 of the Mediaguide AAA Albums. But it was the arrival of Cecil’s debut solo album “Rebel Yellow” that announced this unlikely troubadour as a fully formed and utterly unique presence in the world of independent hip hop.

Besides keeping rowdy kids entertained with internet access, it affords well-traveled tech bloggers the ability to do what we do at 30,000 feet. And now, Gogo's wondrous WiFi will do the same for international passengers thanks to Inmarsat's Global Xpress satellite internet service. The partnership adds speedy Ka-band satellite technology to Gogo's existing air-to-ground service starting in 2013. After launching the Inmarsat-5 satellite in midyear, up to 50Mb/s speeds will be at your flying fingertips in some (currently undefined) regions, with worldwide coverage coming in 2014. New ?John Carter? Poster Channels the Spirit of Classic Paperback Covers

Now this is more like it. The first poster [1] we saw for Disney's John Carter was pretty bland. The first trailer [2] wasn't bad, but that and the still images [3] that have been released do more to highlight the film's superficial resemblance to other films such as Prince of Persia, and parts of the Star Wars prequels, than the movie's differentiating qualities. (And let's not have any of that about Edgar Rice Burroughs getting there first with A Princess of Mars, the novel that inspired this movie and plenty of other fantasy and sci-fi films. Those movies locked down some images in a way that people won't be quickly able to let go.)

But here's a new poster for John Carter which looks a good bit like something that might have adorned a paperback cover in the '60s or '70s. That alone makes it a win as far as I'm concerned. Check it out in full below.

[4]

This poster, via Apple [5], is a sort of advance warning for the new trailer, which will arrive late on Wednesday at IGN [6].

John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe. It is directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) and opens on March 9th.
From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes ?John Carter??a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). ?John Carter? is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
